Cost and quotes
How much does sod installation cost in Waco?
Installed sod around Waco usually runs about $1.20 to $2.25 per square foot. Prep work, the grass you pick and how easy it is to get pallets into your yard decide where you land. We give you one written number after we measure.
Is the quote free?
Yes. We come out, measure, look at the dirt and the drainage, and give you a price. No charge and no pressure.
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
Roughly 400 to 500 square feet, depending on the farm and the grass. We order a little extra for cuts around beds and curves.
Why is my quote higher than the price of the sod?
The sod is only part of it. Most of the work is taking out the old grass, loosening and leveling the dirt, adding topsoil where it's thin, and hauling every roll into place.
Timing
What's the best time of year to lay sod in Waco?
Roughly April through September, when the ground is warm. Late spring is the easiest, before the 100-degree stretch starts.
Can you lay sod in winter?
Yes. The sod arrives brown and dormant, roots slowly, and greens up in spring. It keeps mud and erosion down on a bare yard in the meantime.
How long does the install take?
Most Waco yards take one day. Large yards or yards that need a lot of grading can take two.
How soon can you start?
It depends on the season and the sod farms. Spring fills up first, so call early if you want a spring install.
Watering and the Waco watering schedule
What are Waco's watering days?
Under the City of Waco's year-round schedule, odd-numbered addresses water Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, and even-numbered addresses water Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. No outdoor watering on Fridays or between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Can I water new sod more often than my watering days?
City of Waco water customers can apply to the city for a watering variance for new plantings, including newly laid grass. Apply before your install date. Other cities and water suppliers set their own rules.
How much should I water new sod?
Keep it damp, not flooded, for the first one to two weeks, then water less often and more deeply so the roots chase the water down. We leave a written plan that fits your watering days.
What if I'm not on City of Waco water?
Hewitt, Woodway, Robinson and the rural water supply companies around McLennan County each have their own rules. Check your water bill or call your provider before the install.
Prep and soil
Do you remove the old grass?
Yes, every time. Sod laid over an old lawn or weeds doesn't root into the soil underneath.
Do I need topsoil?
Often, yes. Scraped builder lots and the thin soil over limestone west of Waco usually need some. We'll tell you after we look.
Can you fix drainage while you're there?
We grade the yard so water runs away from the house and fill low spots where water sits. Bigger drainage problems like French drains are a separate job.
Is Waco's clay soil bad for sod?
No. Blackland Prairie clay holds nutrients well. It just packs hard and cracks when it's dry, so it needs to be loosened before the sod goes down.
Grass types
Which sod is best for Waco?
St. Augustine for yards with some shade, Bermuda for full sun and heavy use, and Zoysia if you want a thick, soft lawn and don't mind it filling in slower.
Will grass grow under my live oaks?
St. Augustine handles more shade than Bermuda, but no sod grows well in deep shade. Under heavy trees, mulch or beds sometimes make more sense, and we'll tell you if so.
Can you match my existing grass for a patch?
Usually. Bring us out and we'll identify what you have and match it as closely as the sod farms allow.
After the install
When can I mow new sod?
Once it's rooted and a bit taller than your normal mowing height, usually two to three weeks in warm weather. Keep the first mow on a high setting.
When can kids and dogs use the yard?
Light use after about two weeks. Give it the full first month before heavy play if you can.
When should I fertilize new sod?
Wait until it's rooted, usually four to six weeks. Fertilizing too soon can burn new roots.
Why are my sod seams turning brown?
The edges dry out first. Water a little more along the seams and check that your sprinklers reach every corner.
