St. Augustine vs. Bermuda vs. Zoysia: Which Sod for a Waco Yard?
Posted 2026-11-05

For most Waco yards, it comes down to shade. St. Augustine if you've got trees, Bermuda if it's full sun and lots of traffic, and Zoysia if you want a thick, soft lawn and can wait a bit for it to fill in.
St. Augustine
The most common lawn grass in Waco. Wide blades, deep green, and it handles partial shade better than the other two. It needs regular water in summer and doesn't love heavy foot traffic. Great for front yards and yards under oaks.
Bermuda
The tough one. Bermuda loves full sun and heat, spreads fast, and repairs itself after kids, dogs and parties. It's also what you see on a lot of ball fields. The downside is shade: under trees it thins out and gives up. It also creeps into flower beds if you don't edge.
Zoysia
Dense and soft like carpet, handles some shade, and tends to use a little less water than St. Augustine once it's established. It's slower to knit together and usually costs a bit more per pallet.
